The Dirty Guv'nahs are a Southern rock band out of Knoxville, Tennessee, formed in 2006 by a group of University of Tennessee students who came together almost by accident, when bassist Justin Hoskins volunteered a band that didn't yet exist to open a local benefit concert, leaving the group less than a week to learn songs for the show. Known for enthusiastic live shows, the band was continually named the Best Band in Knoxville by readers of the alternative newspaper, Metro Pulse, and gained a strong regional following across the Southeast, releasing four studio albums and playing festivals like Bonnaroo, SXSW, and Wakarusa. Their sound, often compared to The Black Crowes with a dose of Americana, blends gritty rock, soul, gospel, and country, and led to opening slots for acts like Wilco, Train, the Zac Brown Band, and NEEDTOBREATHE, along with a close relationship with the late Levon Helm, at whose Woodstock studio they recorded their 2010 album Youth Is in Our Blood.
